carbonyl group (=C=O)



The =C=O functional group, which is present in a variety of organic compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, and amides. It consists of a carbon atom joined by a double covalent bond to an oxygen atom. Inorganic carbonyls contain carbonyl groups bound directly to metal atoms.
