A state of unconsciousness in which a person cannot be roused by sensory stimulation and is unaware of his or her surroundings. Body functions continue but may be impaired, depending on the cause. These include poisoning, head injury, diabetes, and brain diseases, include stroke and convulsions. Sever malfunction of the lungs, liver, or kidneys may lead to coma.
