laxative

Any agent used to counteract constipation. Various kinds of laxative are available, including bulk-forming drugs (mainly prescribed for people with bowel disease), stimulant laxatives, fecal softeners, and saline purgatives. However, modern medical thinking is that laxatives are rarely necessary. Constipation should be kept at bay by regular exercise and a diet higer in fiber.
