David McKay was a biochemist at the Johnson Space Center who, on 7 August 1996, along with eight colleagues, created a worldwide sensation with the announcement of the results of their investigation into an SNC meteorite known as ALH 84001. "We have concluded," said McKay, "that there is evidence of early life on Mars."
