metaphase
The phase of mitosis or meiosis
when the chromosomes align along the
center of the cell on the equator of the spindle.
Because metaphase chromosomes are highly condensed, scientists use these
chromosomes for gene mapping and identifying
chromosomal aberrations. Metaphase comes after prophase
and before anaphase. Related
