nuclear reaction Any reaction that involves a change in the nucleus of an atom, as distinct from a chemical reaction which involves only the orbital electron. Such reactions occur naturally, on the Earth in radioactive nuclides, and in stars as thermonuclear reactions. They are also produced artificially in nuclear reactor, nuclear weapons, and controlled thermonuclear reactions. See also nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
