phenolphthalein




An organic compound, C20H14O4, prepared by a reaction between phenol and phthalic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid. Phenolphthalein is used as a chemical indicator (colorless in acid solutions, red-pink in alkalis), in laxatives, and in dyes.
