polystyrene



A synthetic, organic polymer, composed of long chains of the aromatic compound styrene (C6H5CH=CH2). Polystyrene is a strong thermoplastic resin, acid- and alkali-resistant, non-absorbent, and an excellent electrical insulator. It is used as a rigid molded plastic and (for upholstery and thermal insulation) as a foam.
