propane (C3H8)
A colorless, flammable gas, the third member of the alkane
series of hydrocarbons. It occurs in
natural gas, from which it is obtained;
it is also acquired by the cracking of
petroleum. Propane is used as a fuel (called
bottled gas), as a solvent,
and in the preparation of many chemicals. It is oxidized to acetaldehyde.
