Royal Society

The Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge (to give it its full name), the premier English scientific society. Probably the most famous scientific society in the world, it also has a claim to be the oldest surviving. It had its origins in weekly meetings of scientists in London in the 1640s and was granted a royal charter by Charles II in 1660. Past presidents include Samuel Pepys, Isaac Newton, and Ernest Rutherford.
