spermatheca



A reproductive organ found in the females of insects, some molluscs, oligochaeta worms, some other invertebrates, and some vertebrates. It is used to store sperm that the male has passed to the female via a spermatophore and in some species is the site of fertilization. Some species, such as earthworms, have multiple spermathecae.
