Whitehead, Alfred North (1861-1947) English mathematician and philosopher. He was co-author with Bertrand Russell of Principia Mathematica (1910-13), a major landmark in the philosophy of mathematics; and while teaching at Harvard University (from 1924) he developed a monumental system of metaphysics, most comprehensively expounded in Process and Reality (1929).
