zoology
The scientific study of animal life. Originally concerned with the classification of animal groups, comparative anatomy and physiology, the science now also embraces the fields of evolution, genetics, embryology, biochemistry, animal behavior, ecology, and paleontology. Zoology, botany, and microbiology make up the science of biology. Anthropology is an extension of zoology.
