Main components of a colorimeter.

Colorimetry involves techniques for measuring and describing the phenomenon of color. Since the experience of color is largely subjective and similar experiences can occur with quite different sets of physical phenomena, many different instruments (colorimeters) and criteria are employed.

Of two basic approaches to color measurement, one involves the visual comparison of colors (using color comparators), while the other employs the instruments and techniques of photometry and spectroscopy.
