The stratosphere is the region of Earth's atmosphere immediately above the troposphere that extends from about 10 kilometers to about 50 kilometers above the planet's surface. Its temperature increases with altitude from about 240 K to about 270 K (roughly the freezing point of water). It includes the ozone layer.

The stratosphere is separated from the mesosphere by the stratopause.
