biosynthesis

The process in living cells by which complex chemical substances, such as proteins, are made from simpler substances. A gene "orders" a molecule of RNA to be made, which carries the genetic instructions from the DNA. On the ribosomes of the cell, the protein is built up from molecules of amino acids, in the order determined by the genetic instructions carried by the RNA.
