mutagen

A mutagen is anything that causes an increase in the number of mutations in a population of organisms, Mutagens work by affecting the genes, thus producing inherited defects. They may damage chromosomes, or change the DNA and affect the DNA code. Mutagens include chemicals (such as colchicine) and ionizing radiation (such as radioactivity and X-rays). Some mutagens have been shown to cause cancer.
